The word "avatar" has its origins in Hindu mythology. It means "god's visit to Earth to fix something that is broken". Vishnu, one of the 3 gods shielding creation, visits Earth frequently. As Hindu mythology state, Vishnu is dark-blue in colour. Having been possibly inspired by Hindu mythology, James Cameron has also decided to paint the aliens blue.
The action takes place in the year 2154. It features the eternal human vices, such as greed, immaturity and ferocity that results from ignorance.
The story revolves around a soldier - Jack - who goes to Pandora the planet placed in the Alpha Centauri star system to help The Corporation that wants to mine and export a precious mineral called unobtainium. The Na'vi are the alien sentient humonoid civilization living and thriving on Pandora. They are a part of a huge symbiotic living system that contains plants and animals which are all connected by a biological interaction network. The Corporation intends to mine the planet and the Na'vi fight for their homeland. The rapid expansion of the mining colony menaces the continued existence of the local tribe.
When on a mission, Jake is taken in by the Na'vi and explores their habitat, culture and language. Natirii, the female Na'vi he meets in the forest, helps him through this journey. Jake falls in love with her.
Avatars are biological creatures - a combination of human and alien DNA. They are controlled by a human whose DNA they were made from. The soldier controls an avatar that is made from his brother's DNA.
Avatar is an idealistic movie showing an ideal world. The ending is particularly poignant. The visual effects are spectacular. The alien world Cameron and his team display to the viewer is one of the most thought-out and consistent. The movie is worth watching. |
